In the Sandhills of North Carolina we are seeking an Assistant Land Steward (ALS) who works with and is
supervised by the Stewardship Manager. This position is based out of our Southern Pines, NC. field
office. This is a regular, full-time, salaried position with secured funding for 4 years with a possibility of
extending.
The ALS will assist with planning and implementing preserve ecological restoration projects, including
but not limited to restoration harvests, hardwood control, tree and ground layer planting. They will
assist with stewardship activities including fire management operations, management of invasive
species, facilities maintenance, and easement monitoring. This position will require irregular work hours
and long days. While this position will work primarily within the Sandhills of NC., they could occasionally
travel and stay overnight at other sites.

The Assistant Land Steward position is based in Southern Pines, NC. Southern Pines is a small-town
setting.
This is a full-time position with benefits. Funding is available for 4 years, beginning in November 2022,
and may be extended if additional funding is secured.
What You’ll Bring:
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in ecological land management or similar field or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) and successful completion of FFT1 task book or
equivalent experience and training. Requirements for FFT1 can be found in the Conservancy

Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners.
Experience with natural systems and ecological land management principles.
Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience completing tasks independently.
Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
Experience with ArcGIS Pro preferred.
Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
Must achieve physical fitness standards as determined by the local Fire Program Manager and
the TNC Fire Manual.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery preferred.
Knowledge of the factors influencing river flows a plus.
Remote Pilot License or willingness to acquire.
Qualified as or working on completion of Single Resource Boss (SRB), including coursework and

Experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
Experience leading effectively in stressful situations.
Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
Knowledge of current trends and practices in land management and natural resource
conservation.
