Description

Marstel-Day, LLC, an environmental consulting firm, seeks entry-level Researchers with a strong commitment to a conservation ethic and a strong desire to identify and support strategies for natural resource conservation, and a commitment to use “green” best management practices in the performance of their work in the Company’s Fredericksburg Office on a variety of projects, primarily in support of the Company’s natural resource conservation, habitat restoration, environmental planning, and sustainability initiatives.

Primary Duties and Capabilities:
• Assist with a wide range of natural resource conservation, biological surveys, and habitat restoration tasks for mainly federal clients in the mid-Atlantic, including: periodic field surveys (listed species, invasive plants, wildlife [birds, bats, herptiles], plants, insects, forest inventories) and aquatic surveys (benthic macroinvertebrates, fish, water quality); natural resources management plans; habitat restoration and management; stream restoration; wetlands delineation; water resources compliance; environmental outreach materials;
• Report preparation (writing, editing, formatting, document production)
• Assist with environmental planning for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) projects nationwide, including supporting environmental assessments
• Assist with supporting environmental policy, conservation planning, and program performance assessments for clients regarding natural resource conservation, NEPA, and land use sustainability initiatives, often focused at regional and national levels
• Perform data and database management for specific projects
• Assist Company mid-level and senior staff in responding to client generated statements of work for task/delivery orders and preparing deliverables
• Apply research techniques and methods, as directed by senior staff, in the investigation and solution of conceptual, planning, design, or implementation problems
• Support senior staff in initial evaluations of existing procedures, processes, techniques, models, and/or systems
• General research, data collection, monitoring social and conventional media, and preparing draft sections for reports and analyses
Essential Functions Description:
The incumbent will mainly work indoors (climate controlled work station in Fredericksburg, VA, or remotely at home during COVID-19) and will conduct field investigations in the mid-Atlantic area (approximately 20-25% of the time). Field work will be conducted in various outdoor settings, typically on military installations or other federal lands, and regularly under extreme weather conditions (heat, cold) with the potential of environmental safety concerns (biting insects, uneven terrain, on/near waterbodies). The incumbent occasionally may be required to travel between various work stations and/or offices to coordinate work, support public meetings, participate in meetings at a client’s location, and may undertake airline travel for professional development or work meetings. In addition, the incumbent may be required to periodically drive a 4WD vehicle and infrequently conduct fieldwork from a canoe or boat. Incumbent will be required to frequently organize and coordinate schedules, analyze and interpret data, engage in fast-moving problem solving, communicate with the public, and craft written communications, including use of e-mail and other electronic reproduction of words, graphs, data and documents. Incumbent will be required to frequently use and be proficient with computers, telephones and mobile communication devices, copy machines and printers.


Applicants must have the following qualifications:
• A strong commitment to a conservation ethic, a strong desire to identify and support strategies for natural resource conservation, and a commitment to use green best management practices in the performance of work.
• At least one year of employment experience (internships, volunteer positions, or research projects associated with advanced course work in a related field will count toward this time requirement) pertaining to natural resource conservation, ecological field studies, habitat restoration, or environmental/conservation planning. Skills in terrestrial and aquatic habitat restoration, biological surveys, invasive species, pollinator conservation, forest management, wetlands delineation, and/or water resources are a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in ecology, natural resource sciences, environmental science, environmental policy, biology, landscape architecture, or a related field.
• A minimum 3.4 GPA out of a possible 4 in the highest degree obtained.
• A strong interest in field ecology and natural history, demonstrated through prior experience working in field conditions either through academic courses, internships, or volunteer and paid positions. Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills, with a strong attention to detail.
• Demonstrated experience editing documents, formatting reports using Word, Adobe Acrobat, and document production.
• Sound judgment, and the ability to work in teams or independently in office and field settings.
• A strong commitment to safety first while working in field settings.
• Strong proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and SharePoint and Adobe Acrobat
Additional preferred qualifications and skills that are a plus include the following:
• Proficiency with GIS applications to prepare maps and manage geographic data.
• Using GPS technology and experience in field navigation techniques.
• Experience with cultural resources management, archaeology and/or architectural history a plus.
• Experience driving in field settings with a 4WD and/or conducting fieldwork from a canoe or boat.
• A current First Aid/CPR certification, or a willingness to obtain it shortly after hire.
The incumbent must:
• Be eligible to work in the United States (a DHS Form I-9 must be completed by the selected candidate and will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for verification of eligibility to work through E-Verify).
• Submit to and pass a company criminal background check, if selected for the position. This is an ongoing contingency even after being hired.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• It is a plus for someone to currently live in, or be willing to relocate to, a designated HUBZone (see www.sba.gov/hubzone/ for more information) (a relocation allowance may be considered).
