PhD Assistantship in Advanced Forest Management Planning at North Carolina State
University
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NCSU is seeking a PhD-level
graduate student to participate in research developing integrated forest management planning
strategies. The underlying need is based on sustaining ecosystem functions and biodiversity
with objectives of maximizing wildlife habitat for a variety of game species in addition to cash
flow, and NPV, across many forest types and over a minimum 100 year planning horizon in
North Carolina. The student will join a team of researchers, foresters and wildlife biologist from
the NC Wildlife Resource Commission and NCSU in quantifying forest management dynamics
in light of climate change and human population growth and a need for highly informed and
intergrated management responses. The position is available August 2019 and includes four
guaranteed years of funding (stipend, tuition, fees and health insurance).
Qualifications: BS degree in Forestry from an SAF accredited University with an MS in
Operations Research or Forest Management with an emphasis on Operations Research.
Experience with GIS, Python or R is desirable. Applicants should be able to work independently,
but also cooperatively with other researchers and managers on the larger project. Applicants
should also have a strong work ethic, demonstrated writing and quantitative capabilities.
