Description

One position is available for a highly motivated PhD student to study disturbance ecology and ecosystem resilience and stability at Boise State University beginning Summer or Fall 2022. This position is part of a NASA-funded project evaluating how disturbance interactions affect tree mortality and forest recovery across the Southern Rockies. Topics include integrating field and multi-source remote sensing data (e.g., satellite and drone-mounted multispectral), as well as mapping, modeling, and predicting extreme and interacting natural hazards, heterogeneity of fire effects on recovery, and the efficacy of restoration efforts.


About the program


The PhD student will be advised by Dr. Megan Cattau and will be an active member of the Human Environment Systems (HES) group at Boise State University. HES is a group of faculty and students committed to transdisciplinary, team-based, actionable research that addresses real-world environmental challenges. Depending on their interests, the student  may choose from among a range of PhD programs at Boise State University, including Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, Geosciences, or Computing.


 


Qualifications


Minimum qualifications:


Bachelor of Science or Arts (BS or BA) in Ecology, Biology, Conservation, Geography, or a related field
Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency
Using R, GEE, Python, or other statistical, geospatial software
Conducting analysis of remotely sensed data
Collecting, compiling, and analyzing large datasets
Interest in working in collaborative, transdisciplinary teams grounded in mutual respect and responsibility
 


Preferred qualifications:


Master of Science or Arts (MS or MA) in Ecology, Biology, Conservation, Geography, Environmental Management, or a related field and/or relevant research or job experience
Experience with integration of multi-source remotely sensed datasets
Experience with ecology and/or social-ecological systems
Experience working in land use change, wildfire or disturbance ecology, and/or restoration ecology from a social-ecological perspective
Demonstrated research success through peer-reviewed publications and/or delivery of results to relevant stakeholders.


This position includes support in the form of a graduate assistantship (renewable, 12-month stipend), tuition and fee waiver, and health insurance.
