Description

You are the right person for this GIS Technician position if you are a detailed oriented person with exceptional data collection skills and a desire to impact the Triad. The GIS Technician will assist the Planning Department primarily with inventorying stormwater and utility infrastructure for multiple planning projects important to member governments.  The Triad spans 12 counties and has a population of 1.7 million people (larger than some states), which is why this role will require you to use your comprehensive skills and grow in your abilities.


 


The ideal candidate for the GIS Technician is passionate about regional projects and supporting PTRC's member governments.  Thriving in a fast-paced, creative and collaborative environment while supporting a range of other water resource, GIS, and planning projects is beneficial to this role.


 


For a typical assignment, the GIS Technician would assist with data collection activities and analysis in the office and/or field and conduct research as needed to assist senior staff on projects.  In an engaging and user-friendly manner, the technician would analyze and map various data types, prepare memos explaining methodology and findings while assisting with preparing new or existing reporting, presentations, and community outreach activities.  The GIS Technician will gain valuable insight and experience across a broad spectrum of government functions.  The GIS Technician will regularly involve fieldwork, operating a personal computer, tablet, and various software programs (MS Office and ESRI ArcGIS).  The job posting will remain open until the position is filled.

Qualifications
The candidate for the GIS Technician would have a minimum Associate’s degree in urban planning, engineering, geography, environmental science, or a related field. The candidate can distinguish themselves with an undergraduate degree in one of these fields. Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS and knowledge of environmental processes, especially related to stormwater, research processes and statistical analysis and interpretation, and public administration and government jurisdiction interrelationships would be ideal. Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, equipment and oral and written communications and interpersonal relations will be essential in this role.

If you are selected to fill the role of GIS Technician, you will need to present a valid Driver’s License, pass the pre-employment drug screen and background screening process. Travel within the region through the week is a requirement. Hours worked are flexible and average 24 hours per week but not to exceed 1,000 hours annually.
