Description

The Prescribed Fire Crew Manager participates in park operations, restoration, maintenance, and management. This position will report to the Division’s Ecological Burn Coordinator and work on tasks that include prescribed fire, burn unit prep, mapping fire units, marking fire lines, chainsaw and felling work, traveling extensively to various state parks and overnight stays, entering data into databases, and equipment maintenance. Duties may involve work in harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain


Duties include the following functions:
-Participates in prescribed fire, which may include; burn unit prep, fire operations, managing staff and volunteers, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up, and monitoring.
-Participates in restoration projects including thinning, planting, and other projects
-Maintaining parks and buildings, which may include; maintaining tools and equipment, repairing fences and gates, posting boundaries, and helping to maintain grounds and structures.
-Standard work week will be Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week, but may change often and on short notice. Workweek may occasionally exceed 40 hours during fire operations.
-Assists with the supervision of 11-month Prescribed Fire Crew. Responsible for keeping track of crew work hours and ensuring time is submitted weekly
-Will be based out of the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in Seven Springs, N.C.
-Housing is available
Qualifications
-Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss).
-Experience supervising staff.
-Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment and vehicles.
-High school diploma and 1 to 2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management. Prefer a bachelor’s degree in forestry, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field, or active and ongoing study toward such a degree and/or two years related work experience or related experience in land management.
-Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
-Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.: chainsaw, ATV, tractor and implements, leaf blower, radio, hand tools, drip torch, etc.)
-Ability to follow written and verbal instructions from co-workers.
-Ability to develop timeframes and then complete tasks within timeframes.
-Experience and willingness to work with a wide range of people.
-Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
-Ability to navigate to remote sites with maps, written directions, and GPS.
-Ability to immediately obtain a valid NC drivers license.
