The Program Assistant will provide assistance with environmental and water quality education programs.  Duties include:  collecting, transporting and processing samples for various water and environmental projects; collecting and recording data both off and onsite; performing bacteria analyses; maintaining laboratory equipment; preparing and presenting public education presentations (50% of time).  Other duties include:  assist in maintenance and management of Discovery Garden which includes maintaining the ornamental pond; assisting with garden maintenance tasks and storm water system upkeep.  Willingness to work closely with and supervise garden volunteers.  Will also assist other agricultural agents as needed and as time permits in areas of horticulture, row crops and livestock. Willingness to work outside in different weather conditions.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension provides knowledge-based research information from North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University to the citizens of the state to enrich and enhance the lives of its citizens through educational programs, information dissemination, and public events. 

The NCCE Onslow County gives local residents easy access to the resources and expertise of both universities.

Department Required Skills
High school diploma with two years of specialized training and/or education in environmental education and water quality are desirable. 

Agricultural experience or background are also a plus. 
 
Must be tolerant of alligators and snakes. 
 
Must not be afraid of heights, as sampling occurs from bridges.

Knowledgeable in creating documents with word processing and spreadsheet programs.

Good organizational and people skills, and a willingness to learn.
