We will employ an assistant to the Science Support Team (SST) to help administer various survey/research projects. Some examples include: the NC Bird Atlas, the North Carolina Birding Trail, NABat, and CASP. The primary duties this position will be engaging the public through social media, website, and at in person events. Additionally, the position with help with other logistical duties related to C*Science organizational management. There may be opportunities for field work on various projects depending on availability and experience of the successful applicant. The primary duties will be: • Develop content for website, social media and newsletters (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, MailChimp/blog) – Prior experience managing social media in a business setting required - creativity a must! – Develop content (blog/newsletter) for several websites – Ensure regular posting and engagement with audiences • Assist in planning and development of NC Bird Atlas and other C*Science promotions. – Provide creative input to developing compelling campaign messaging. – Coordinate meetings and activities to promote nature appreciation. • Attend/Represent program at events. The Science Support Team will often be present at festivals and other outdoor recreation-related events. This requires engaging the public in conversations about nature, volunteering, and wildlife watching. The skills, experience, and enthusiasm of the successful applicant will determine the breadth and depth of any additional projects to work on. These may include: • Assist in the maintenance of the several Wordpress websites – https://ncbirdingtrail.org – https://ncbirdatlas.org – https://nc-wild.org • Manage NC Birding Trail Site data, occasionally visiting sites across North Carolina. The technician will secure their own housing in the Raleigh, NC area. Occasional overnight travel to various locations in the state will be required and travel expenses will be provided and/or reimbursed. Work week averages 40 hours but longer work weeks may be required. A vehicle and other necessary equipment will be available. Science Support The Science Support Group supports and facilitates surveys and research projects in the Wildlife Diversity section of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
Qualifications Four-year degree majoring in either recreation, tourism, communications, wildlife, or related disciplines. Skills & Experience • Required – Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Demonstrated experience composing and editing publication-worthy content for both print and online media. Ability to modify writing style to fit audience and venue (e.g., printed guide vs. social media). • Knowledge of the subject matter is helpful, but of greater use is innate communicative skill, particularly the abilities to ask incisive questions and to generalize broad information both pithily and accurately. – Proven track record working independently and in teams, working on multiple projects, and meeting deadlines. – Proficiency managing multiple social media accounts and a demonstrated understanding of the content and strategy appropriate to each. Vision for designing and executing a successful media campaign. – Proficiency working with WordPress or strong familiarity with other content management systems. – Experience using Google Analytics to analyze web traffic. – Interact professionally with members of the general public. – Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) – Good organizational skills, personal motivation, and a love of wildlife work are essential! • Preferred – Experience managing and manipulating data (e.g., retrieving data from online sources, formatting for data analyses) – Knowledge of and familiarity with birding and the birding community (North Carolina experience preferred).
