The City of Kinston is county seat for Lenoir County, only 45 miles from the coast, midway between beach. It was founded in 1762 and has a population of 22,000. It is home to numerous manufacturing facilities, including Smithfield Foods, Lenox China, Sanderson Farms, Spirit Aerosystems, and the NC Global Transpark. Kinston is also host to the Down East Wood Ducks (Class A baseball), Lions Adventure Water Park, and the world famous Chef and the Farmer restaurant. The City of Kinston Public Services Department provides many services to our citizens, including electric power, drinking water, wastewater, storm water, garbage collection, recycling, street maintenance, etc.
The engineering internship will be 40 hours a week for 12 weeks during summer 2020. The internship will include flow testing, pipe testing, inspections, engineering, water models and condition assessment.
The Engineering Intern will:
- Evaluate pipe system conditions for water, wastewater and stormwater systems.
- Perform pipe condition assessments using CCTV, smoke testing, flow testing and visual inspections.
- Use water model to evaluate water system efficiency and possible improvements
The Engineering Intern:
- Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office products, familiar with ArcGIS systems, and have knowledge of how water and sewer pipe systems work.
- Have the ability to work outdoors and indoors, and to lift 50 lbs required.
- Must have a valid driver's license.

The Rural Works! internship program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging internship experience for high-caliber students who work with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges.
As part of the Rural Works! program, interns receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! Coordinator throughout their internship experience. Upon completion of the internship, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews
