NC State’s Rural Works! program is pleased to partner with the NC Department of Transporation to offer Summer Engineering Assistant Internships across North Carolina.  You must apply directly to the Summer Engineering Assistant Internship page.  Applications close on February 28, 2020.


The Summer Engineering Assistants Program offers students in good academic standing the opportunity to work one summer or consecutive summers as interns in the various fields at the Department of Transportation. Students learn about the work performed at NCDOT and gain valuable exposure. Based on need, there will be internship positions available for those in a variety of majors. Numerous candidates will be selected from this posting for positions statewide. In addition, participants receive professional development coaching through NC State’s Rural Works! program.  The internship program will begin on May 18, 2020 and end August 7th.



Assignments available in the following Areas: Photogrammetry, Hydraulics, Locations and Survey, License and Theft Bureau (DMV), Structures Management, Materials and Test, Traffic Safety, Traffic Management, Contract Standards and Development Unit,  Construction (offered in all Divisions) Maintenance (Offered in all Divisions), Project Management & Powell Bill, Transportation Planning, Roadway Design, Geotechnical Unit.

Positions are located statewide. Job locations depend on the availability and location of current construction projects, job requirements, and the student's needs and interests. Therefore, applicants must specify desired job location in the supplemental questions section. Eligibility Requirements



  • Must be a currently enrolled student in an associates, bachelors, or masters level program at an accredited institution.

  • Completed at least 24 semester hours upon employment.

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.3 (based on 4.0 scale)

  • Must demonstrate GPA by attaching a transcript.


This internship is part of NC State’s Rural Works! Program.  The Rural Works! internship program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging internship experience for high-caliber students who work with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges.


As part of the Rural Works! program, interns receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! coordinator throughout their internship experience.  Upon completion of the internship, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews
