Description

The City of Kinston is county seat for Lenoir County, only 45 miles from the coast, midway between beach. It was founded in 1762 and has a population of 22,000. It is home to numerous manufacturing facilities, including Smithfield Foods, Lenox China, Sanderson Farms, Spirit Aerosystems, and the NC Global Transpark. Kinston is also host to the Down East Wood Ducks (Class A baseball), Lions Adventure Water Park, and the world famous Chef and the Farmer restaurant. The City of Kinston Public Services Department provides many services to our citizens, including electric power, drinking water, wastewater, storm water, garbage collection, recycling, street maintenance, etc.


This internship will be 40 hours a week for 12 weeks during summer 2020.  The internship will involve water treatment, wastewater treatment, engineering, sampling and testing.


The Wastewater System Intern will:



  • Learn wastewater treatment plant operations

  • Evaluate treatment plant processes and seek ways to improve efficiency

  • Perform laboratory testing, field testing, and participate in major plant repairs/modifications.


The ideal intern:



  • Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office products and have knowledge of sewer treatment systems.

  • Have some lab experience performing qualitative testing.

  • Have the ability to work outdoors and indoors. Must have a valid driver's license.


This internship is part of NC State’s Rural Works! Program.  The Rural Works! internship program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging internship experience for high-caliber students who work with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges.


As part of the Rural Works! program, interns receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! Coordinator throughout their internship experience.  Upon completion of the internship, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews

Qualifications
Minimum 2 semesters of college curriculum with 2.5 GPA or higher;

Coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental engineering with lab experience
