The Raleigh Air Measurements Group provides air emissions testing services to a wide range of clients - power plants, refineries, chemical plants, pulp and paper plants, manufacturing facilities, waste combustors, the government, etc. We are looking to fill a position as an air sampling scientist to serve as a member of the test team that travels to the client's facility and conducts emissions measurements. The air sampling scientist will become proficient in the various EPA sampling methods and develop knowledge about many types of industrial processes. The experienced air sampling scientist typically advances into either a client oriented career path of project management and business development or into a technical oriented career path working with the latest monitoring and analytical equipment.

Our projects involve a considerable amount of overnight travel, generally in the eastern United States; however, we conduct projects all over the world. The field-testing portion of each project typically lasts from 1 to 5 days and the test teams are generally home on the weekends, but some projects may require working or traveling on a weekend. The number of people needed in the field and the number of days in the field, varies with each project and changes from week to week. When the air sampling scientist is not in the field, duties may include equipment calibrations and repairs, prep and packing for future projects, data reduction and processing, report writing, and tasks of that nature.

Our testing projects can involve moving equipment to, and working at, elevated test locations, such as an exhaust stack platform or a rooftop. Access to the test location may be by elevator, stairs, or a ladder. The job requires a person who can comfortably lift and carry 50 pounds. During testing, the air sampling scientist will be at the location recording data, operating equipment, or working in the trailer recovering samples, performing analysis, etc. Much of the work is outdoors, so the air sampling scientist should be able to work comfortably throughout all the seasons.

For someone who likes to travel and see new places, likes working outside and not being tied to a desk, has an interest in all kinds of industrial processes, and enjoys the challenges and of working as a member of a team on a wide variety of short projects, this can be a very rewarding job.
