Title
Post-Doc, Epidemiological analysis of public health
Organization
North Carolina State University
Description

Post-doctoral position with Dr. Ayse Ercumen to conduct epidemiologic analysis of relationships between sanitation coverage, measures of environmental contamination and child health, using data collected as part of the WASH Benefits Bangladesh trial.

WASH Benefits is a large-scale randomized controlled trial that assessed the impact of individual and combined water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition interventions on child growth and diarrhea in rural Bangladesh and Kenya (http://www.washbenefits.net/). The fellow will work on analysis of data collected in a subset of households in the sanitation and control arms of the WASH Benefits Bangladesh trial. Specifically, this sub-study longitudinally visited households in these two arms over two years to measure household- and community-level sanitation coverage, latrine use by self-report and sensor observations, E. coli contamination in stored drinking water, caregiver and child hands, soil and food, and diarrhea in children under the age of 5 years.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct epidemiologic analyses of these data, prepare manuscripts for publication and present findings at scientific meetings. The objectives are to quantify sanitation uptake using self-reported use and sensor data, explore the impact of household- and community-level sanitation on fecal contamination along disease transmission pathways using longitudinal measurements, and assess contributions of these pathways to child diarrhea. Opportunities exist to develop additional research questions for exploration.
