The Southern Research Station is seeking a Hydrologic Science Technician, GS-1316, at the GS-7 level. The duty station for the position will be the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory (Coweeta) in Otto, NC. Coweeta is a USDA Forest Service Experimental Forest; Forest Service researchers associated with Coweeta work cooperatively with universities, National Forests, and local, state, and other federal agencies. Coweeta has been in continuous operation since 1934 and the research program spans the continuum of basic to applied science.


 


The incumbent will participate in ongoing team-oriented research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances. Duties include but are not limited to: (1) performing hydrologic measurements in support of ecological research; (2) field work, including installing and maintaining the unit’s hydrologic instrumentation; and (3) conducting routine maintenance, installation and calibrations of the long-term climate and hydrology network.


 


This position requires: (1) quantitative processing of hydrologic data; preparing notes requiring standard abbreviations and legends common to hydrology; and keeping appropriate records that document the proper evaluation and interpretation of hydrologic data; (2) using field equipment for water and sediment sampling, (3) participating in multidisciplinary, team-oriented research projects, and (4) data analysis and quality control. Occasional operation of a chainsaw is required; if the incumbent is not currently Forest Service certified, they will be required to complete training within the first year of employment.
