We are currently accepting applications for two (2) avian technicians that will assist with several bird projects in various habitats throughout eastern NC. Expected work will include using techniques such as point counts, line transect surveys, nest searching, trapping, mist-netting, and bird banding. Examples of species and projects include: monitoring Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavity trees, radio-tracking saltmarsh sparrows, and banding and nest searching for Black-throated Green Warblers and Loggerhead Shrikes. Other anticipated responsibilities include using GIS to identify potential survey sites and mapping, coordinating field logistics, contacting landowners, and compiling data into various databases and spreadsheets. As needed, technician will provide assistance with equipment maintenance and miscellaneous administrative duties.
Expected start dates for both positions is mid-January 2020, with one lasting six (6) months through mid-July, and the other eleven (11) months through mid-December. Free, shared housing may be available on one of our game lands near the town of Atkinson in southeast NC. Work weeks typically average 40 hours Monday-Friday; however, applicant should expect this to vary with some long days to complete assignments on time. Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology or related field; at least two full seasons of field experience identifying birds by sight and voice; ability to navigate with a GPS unit; and a solid familiarity with Microsoft Office and ArcMap products. Mist-netting and bird handling preferred. This position requires an individual that can work independently in remote field locations, which may include hot, humid weather and insects.
Salary
At least $593.20/week, not including per diem.
