Title
Forest Economics Intern
Organization
Hancock Timber Resource Group
Description

Each summer, Hancock Natural Resource Group (HNRG), a global timberland and farmland investment
manager, sponsors a student to spend 10-12 weeks during the summer working as an intern with our
economics research team. The internship will involve providing support on a variety of research
initiatives across our business units as well as undertaking an independent research project. By the end of
the summer, the student is expected to present the results of his/her research to the HNRG investment
staff.
While the research topic is often predetermined, the student will be able to craft, in conjunction with the
research team, a project from a variety of ongoing research at HNRG. Students are also encouraged to
develop ideas of their own--provided they identify a topic that meets HNRG's criteria--which they may be
interested in pursuing further once they return to school. Examples of recent projects and ongoing areas of
study here at HNRG include:
• Analysis of the relationship between inflation and performance of timberland and
farmland, past and future expectations
• Develop case studies using financial modeling for operating within a regenerative
agriculture strategy
• Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) growth and implications on future demand
Mary Ellen Aronow, HNRG's Director, Forest Economics supervises the internship, with assistance from
the full economic research staff. Typically, two weeks will be spent familiarizing the student with
HNRG's overall mission as well as the specifics of the project. The next three to four weeks are spent
developing the appropriate model or framework for analyzing the relevant data. Two to three weeks are
then spent gathering, analyzing, and organizing results, and the final weeks are spent preparing the
presentation of those results.
In addition to the research project, the student will be called upon to assist in other HNRG activities.
These will provide the intern with an opportunity to become more familiar with the timberland and
agriculture investment management business should they have further professional interest in HNRG.
This is a paid internship, working remotely.
The student applicant is expected to be pursuing a graduate degree in natural resources, agriculture, real
estate, or business, with a strong emphasis on economics and finance preferred. An interest in timberland,
farmland, or real asset investment and management is expected. Work experience in the sector is helpful,
but not required.

This year’s intern program is ideal for graduate students who have interests in conducting industry- and business-oriented research in forestry, forest/agricultural finance and economics, preferably with knowledge in statistics and GIS. For this year’s program, we are especially interested in candidates with research experience in regenerative agriculture and the carbon sequestration opportunities in agriculture and/or forestry.
