Seeking a program director responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of the Alaska
Chapter’s priority strategy for conservation in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska.
The Nature Conservancy’s approach is to conserve Alaska’s lands and waters with pragmatic, widely
supported solutions that are rooted in science. We work with a broad spectrum of partners around
common values and respect for equity at all stages of conservation. We pursue lasting results to
Alaska’s most pressing conservation challenges with a commitment to innovation and emphasis on
Indigenous and community-based stewardship.
Strategy: The Nature Conservancy is implementing a long-term holistic strategy with a diverse set of
stakeholders in Bristol Bay to support Indigenous-led conservation and protect the last great wild
salmon run in the world. Our approach includes land and water protection, increased rights to lands and
resources for Indigenous peoples, sustainable economic opportunities, and improving Indigenous and
local decision-making authority. The Bristol Bay Program Director will lead a program of staff, manage
a budget, fundraise, and work with a diverse set of stakeholders and partners to implement this strategy
and achieve conservation outcomes.
Example Qualifications: BA/BS degree minimum experience in conservation, natural or social
science, organization management or related field • Preferred post graduate degree and 5-7 years’
experience • Familiarity and experience with Bristol Bay’s resource management • Experience
influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans • Management experience,
inspiring and leading multifunctional and geographically dispersed teams • Demonstrated experience
managing complex projects including community-based initiatives.
The Bristol Bay Program Director position is located in Alaska with a flexible office location. This is
a full-time position with a desired starting date in Fall 2020 and includes employee health and
retirement benefits among others. Starting salary, depending on experience, $71,800.
