The City of Kinston is county seat for Lenoir County, only 45 miles from the coast, midway between beach. It was founded in 1762 and has a population of 22,000. It is home to numerous manufacturing facilities, including Smithfield Foods, Lenox China, Sanderson Farms, Spirit Aerosystems, and the NC Global Transpark. Kinston is also host to the Down East Wood Ducks (Class A baseball), Lions Adventure Water Park, and the world famous Chef and the Farmer restaurant. The City of Kinston Public Services Department provides many services to our citizens, including electric power, drinking water, wastewater, storm water, garbage collection, recycling, street maintenance, etc.


This internship will last 12 weeks during summer 2020.



The Student Programs Intern will:



  • Evaluate and update webpage activities targeting 8th-12th grade students with career information

  • Administer Kinston's first public utilities/public works summer camp

  • Develop high school summer intern program

  • Create/administer public outreach events and media related to city utility services

  • Compile survey results to gauge public participation/knowledge.


This internship will also include:

  • Teaching

  • Mentoring

  • Advertising

  • Education


The ideal intern will be:



  • Familiar with setting up websites, use of social media programs (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and use of computer devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.

  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office products

  • Able to create lesson plans, curriculums and determine appropriate content for various age groups


Intern must be outgoing, organized, able to work independently and in groups, punctual and well spoken. Must have valid driver license.


This internship is part of NC State’s Rural Works! Program.  The Rural Works! internship program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging internship experience for high-caliber students who work with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges.


As part of the Rural Works! program, interns receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! Coordinator throughout their internship experience.  Upon completion of the internship, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews

Qualifications
Minimum of two semesters of college curriculum with a GPA of at least 2.5.

Coursework/knowledge of website design, social media communications, and general education programs is preferred.
