GENERAL UTILITIES WORKER / TEMPORARY FISH HATCHERY TECHNICIAN
McKinney Lake State Fish Hatchery (1 Position)
The employee assists with channel catfish stocking, general fish culture, and maintenance activities at state fish
hatcheries during the critical channel catfish stocking period. The employee will be paired with permanent staff
to create a stocking team that will accomplish catchable channel catfish stocking objectives. The employee will
assist with routine fish culture activities such as feeding, cleaning of kettle boxes, harvesting and monitoring
fish, etc. Additional duties include maintenance activities such as grass mowing, weed trimming, and general
maintenance responsibilities at fish hatcheries. The employee will work 40 hours per week for six months
beginning in mid-March and ending in September.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to operate and maintain equipment used at a fish
hatchery such as farm tractors, fish feeders, lawn mowers, stocking trucks, other motor vehicles, hand and
power tools, etc. Ability to maintain and repair hatchery equipment, buildings and other facilities. Ability to
collect and record physical, chemical, and biological data. Some ability to prepare written reports.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent is required. One year of experience using grounds and facility maintenance
equipment (tractors, mowers, etc.) is preferred. Applicants having experience in aquaculture are preferred.
Class C or higher North Carolina driver's license is required (may be acquired within 2 weeks of employment).
Salary Range Starting at $11.53/hr
