Description

The City of Shelby is seeking qualified applicants for a Civil Engineer. The Civil Engineer performs difficult professional and technical work involved with the construction, inspection, and maintenance of public and private infrastructure.  Prepares and/or reviews plans and specifications for construction projects, coordinates construction projects and bidding.  Other duties include assists in preparation, review, and/or permitting of construction plans associated with construction sites, and subdivisions; reviews designs/specifications for public works, street, utility, and stormwater projects; manages the prioritization, design, cost estimating, bid preparation, project coordination, construction administration, and/or construction observation of City-wide construction projects; advises citizens, consultants, developers, and contractors of regulations and policies; responds to public complaints and inquiries pertaining to engineering and infrastructure; assists with the preparation and administration of the City's Powell Bill budget; prepares, oversees, prioritizes, and provides quality control for annual street resurfacing program.  Additionally coordinates resurfacing program with Capital Improvements Projects to be completed by other city departments; assists with maintaining the City's GIS mapping of public infrastructure; coordinates work with consulting engineers, other city departments and other governmental agencies; maintains and prepares updates for the City of Shelby Standard Details; obtains and oversees acquisition of easements and right-of-ways; and utilizes AutoCAD or other design software for construction drawings.

Qualifications
Qualified applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree with course work in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related filed and moderate experience in civil and/or environmental engineering. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering, surveying, plan preparation and specifications; design of public works and stormwater projects. Must possess demonstrated leadership and communication skills with the ability to comprehend codes and ordinances; perform difficult engineering computations; skilled in the use of personal computers, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD. Possession of an NC driver's license and NC Engineering Intern certification is preferred.
