Description

The City of Conover is located in western piedmont area of NC and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Conover is located 50 miles northwest of Charlotte; 60 miles west of Winston-Salem. The City has a population of 8500 with a land area of 10.96 square miles. Conover purchases its water, but maintains 150 miles of water mains. The City operates a 1.5 MGD wastewater treatment facility and maintains 120 miles of sewer lines with six (6) lift stations.


The City of Conover owns and operates its own water distribution and wastewater collection system. The engineering internship will be 40 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer of 2020.


The intern will:



  • Perform inspections and assessment of the water and wastewater infrastructure.

  • Evaluate pipe system conditions for water and wastewater systems.

  • Perform pipe condition assessments using CCTV, smoke testing, and flow testing and visual inspections.

  • Assist in GPS of new infrastructure.

  • From the assessments performed above and discussion with staff, the intern will develop white papers for future water and wastewater infrastructure projects relating to replacement, rehabilitation, and/or upgrades of the systems.


The ideal candidate will:



  • Be proficient in using Microsoft Office products

  • Be familiar with ArcGIS systems

  • Have a knowledge of how water and wastewater systems work.

  • Have the ability to work outdoors and indoors

  • Be able to lift 50 pounds.


This internship is part of NC State’s Rural Works! Program.  The Rural Works! internship program supports NC State’s commitment to social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina by offering an engaging internship experience for high-caliber students who work with employers to achieve their workplace goals in rural counties–places with vibrant histories, tremendous opportunities, but significant challenges.


As part of the Rural Works! program, interns receive professional development coaching and support from the Rural Works! coordinator throughout their internship experience.  Upon completion of the internship, participants have the opportunity to attend career readiness workshops providing them with strategies for articulating their internship experience on their resume and during interviews

Qualifications
Candidate must have knowledge or course work in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering principles.

The candidate must have a valid driver's license.
