Light It Up – NC State Honors Steve McKeand

At NC State, we don’t paint the town red to commemorate our accomplishments, we light up the Belltower. It’s our celebratory bat signal.

On May 24, 2017, NC State and the College of Natural Resources celebrated the accomplishments of Dr. Steve McKeand, Forestry and Environmental Resources Professor and Director of the Tree Improvement Cooperative. He received the Governor James E. Holshouser Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Service from the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina.

The Belltower is lighted not only to honor significant accomplishments, but also holidays that honor our veterans like Memorial Day, and NC State’s proudest occasions. In fact, since its completion in 1937, the Memorial Tower has stood as a timekeeper for tradition, a rallying point for the university community, and a perpetual memorial to NC State students who gave their lives in defense of their country.
