2018 Global Engagement Exposition Showcases International Excellence

The Office of Global Engagement hosted the 2018 Global Engagement Exposition on April 24, celebrating achievements in international education and research at NC State.

The Leadership in International Education, Outstanding Global Engagement and the Jackson Rigney International Service awards were presented by Bailian Li, senior vice provost for Global Engagement, as well as the Jackson Rigney Study Abroad Scholarships. Additionally, fourteen groups made poster presentations on topics ranging from international education and partnerships to global health issues and more.

Award nominees and winners included the following:

Leadership in International Education

The Office of Global Engagement selects recipients of this award in three different categories: Study Abroad, Student Success, and Outreach and Extension. Selected winners demonstrate outstanding contributions toward the internationalization of NC State. The honorees were:

  • Maria Brown, director, University Cashier’s Office
  • Beth Glueck, counselor, Counseling Center
  • Tom White, director, Economic Development Partnership, Office of Partnerships and Economic Development

Outstanding Global Engagement Award

This award encourages and recognizes outstanding accomplishment in globally engaged teaching, research, extension and/or engagement and economic development. The nominees for this award were:

  • José Ascencio-Ibáñez, teaching assistant professor, Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry
  • KC Busch, assistant professor, Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education
  • Marina Bykova, professor, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies
  • Huiling Ding, associate professor, Department of English
  • Reza Ghiladi, associate professor, Department of Chemistry
  • Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, professor, Department of Plant and Microbial Biology
  • Kostadin Ivanov, professor, head, Department of Nuclear Engineering
  • Siamak Khorram, professor, founder, Center for Geospatial Analytics
  • Gregory Lewbart, professor, Department of Clinical Sciences
  • Zhilin Li, professor, Department of Mathematics
  • Kevin Oliver, professor, Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences
  • Robert Sandruck, director, Global Programs, Poole College of Management
  • Richard Spontak, Distinguished Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
  • Richard Venditti, professor, Department of Forest Biomaterials

Jose Ascencio-Ibáñez, Linda Hanley-Bowdoin, Kostadin Ivanov and Richard Spontak were selected as the winners of this award.

The Jackson Rigney Study Abroad Scholarship

These awards recognize students for academic achievement. Recipients demonstrate an ability to serve as ambassadors abroad and to positively impact NC State upon their return. The student honorees were:

  • Ariane Alexandrescu, attending the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Fall 2018
  • Natalie Williams, attending the NC State European Center in Prague, Fall 2018
  • Anna Zhao, attending the Sydney Institute of Language and Commerce Business School at Shanghai University dual degree program, 2018-19

Jackson Rigney International Service Award

This award recognizes the distinguished contributions of a faculty or staff member for the promotion of international understanding and service to the university and/or to the international community over the course of their career. The nominees were:

  • Rodolphe Barrangou, associate professor, Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences
  • Stefan Franzen, professor, Department of Chemistry
  • David Jordan, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Crop Science and Extension Specialist, peanut specialist, Department of Crop Science
  • Edward Kick, professor, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics
  • Julia Kornegay, professor and director of graduate programs, Department of Horticultural Science
  • Zhilin Li, professor, Department of Mathematics
  • K. Linga Murty, Progress Energy Distinguished Professor and director of nuclear engineering graduate programs, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
  • Kemafor Ogan, associate professor, Department of Computer Science
  • Erin Sills, professor, Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources
  • Tomislav Vukina, professor, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics

Erin Sills was selected as the winner of this award.
