Meet Jordan Kelber

Ryan Held in Peru

Program and Location:

Spanish Language & Peruvian Culture; Lima, Peru

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I took classes towards my Spanish Minor abroad, and I wanted to see a new country and speak Spanish while there.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that my Spanish is better than I thought, as I was able to communicate with the locals very well.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

The sightseeing, including Machu Picchu and hiking through the Andes mountains for 3 days, and making great friends.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?

Cherish every moment, because it will be over before you know it.

Would you do it again?

I don’t have time to specifically study abroad, but yes I would if I could, and will probably travel to South America again.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

It strengthened my Spanish-speaking abilities and put me in real life situations out of the classroom where I was forced to communicate with native speakers.

Were you surprised by anything during your time abroad?

Everything about the Peruvian way of life was different and I knew that going in, but textbooks and PowerPoints can’t prepare you for the real thing.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

In regards to my class about the history of Peru, I wouldn’t have seen Machu Picchu and other Incan ruins while learning about them in class.
