Race and Place Seminar Series to Explore Role of Racial Justice in Geospatial Analytics

Join us for three seminars addressing the role of racial justice in geospatial analytics. At the end of the semester, the series will conclude with a panel discussion about the state of diversity, inclusion, and racial equity in academia.

This semester, the Geospatial Graduate Student Organization (GGSO) at North Carolina State University will host a three-part Race and Place seminar series, intended to highlight research that contextualizes race by speaking to environmental justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the geographical and geospatial sciences.

January through March, invited faculty speakers will discuss their research at the intersection of geospatial analytics and justice, and the series will conclude in April with a panel discussion about the state of diversity, inclusion and racial equity in academia.

“We’ll be bringing ideas of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion into the forefront of what we do,” says Alexander Yoshizumi, Geospatial Analytics doctoral student and co-president of the GGSO. “They are so important to our work whether we realize it or not. There are so many examples of bias in research through history. Our hope is to become better scientists.”

The virtual seminar series is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Presentations will be recorded and posted on the Center for Geospatial Analytics’ YouTube channel.
