They can also serve as useful tools for environmental protection, according to one NC State expert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe value of sport has never been higher when it comes to sustainability,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/directory\/jonathan-casper\/\">Jonathan Casper<\/a>, an associate professor of parks, recreation and tourism management at the College of Natural Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Casper, whose research focuses on the relationship between sport and the environment, recently led a virtual workshop on how higher education institutions are leveraging sport to promote sustainable behavior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop was hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainableacc.com\/\">ACC Sports Sustainability Team<\/a>, a group of sustainability professionals, collegiate athletic departments and student-athletes within the Atlantic Coast Conference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the workshop, Casper discussed the emergence of sustainability as a social priority, noting that Americans are increasingly accepting and adopting practices aimed at protecting the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe as a society are beginning to change our attitudes and norms related to sustainability in a good way,\u201d Casper said. \u201cPeople are becoming a lot more aware of sustainability as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research shows that younger Americans \u2013 Millennials and adults in Generation Z \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/03\/generation-z-sustainability-lifestyle-buying-decisions\/\">display more sustainably-oriented behavior<\/a> and are inspiring other age groups to act more sustainably.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher education is leading the way in facilitating this social shift, according to Casper. In fact, many universities are establishing departments to promote sustainability among faculty, staff and students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, with public awareness of sustainability growing, universities are uniquely positioned to promote it at a much larger scale than other institutions thanks to the reach of their athletic programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sport is widely acknowledged as an important platform for sustainability and is used by organizations around the world, both professional and collegiate, to <a href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/sport-and-the-environment-what-is-the-connection\/\">reduce their environmental footprint<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, for example, NC State launched <a href=\"https:\/\/recycling.ncsu.edu\/zero-waste-wolfpack\/\">Zero Waste Wolfpack<\/a> to engage fans and volunteers in recycling at football games. It\u2019s also since added <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2021\/01\/here-comes-the-sun\/\">solar panels<\/a> at Carter-Finley Stadium.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithin college sports, we know there is this environmental impact,\u201d Casper said. \u201cWe have large-scale facilities and events that we manage, team travel and fan travel. These all impact the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Casper said college athletic programs and other sports organizations can utilize fandom to prompt broader societal change: \u201cThere\u2019s a trust that comes with a sport organization. It can be a very valuable thing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/view\/journals\/ijsc\/13\/3\/article-p335.xml\">study<\/a> co-authored by Casper highlighted this level of trust among fans, finding that many relied on professional sport organizations for COVID-19 information instead of government health agencies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey [fans] were looking to the sport organizations for advice on health and health policies,\u201d Casper said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While sustainability is sometimes polarized among fans due to their political differences, Casper said sport organizations can utilize the demonstration effect as a method of establishing new social norms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demonstration effect is a term used to describe a social phenomena in which people observe and copy the behaviors of others, according to Casper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an example, Casper pointed to NC State\u2019s Zero Waste Wolfpack program, noting that fans are likely to become more responsive to sustainable behaviors if they see other fans recycling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen people see something, they\u2019re more likely to do it,\u201d Casper said. \u201cSo when they see other fans doing something, they think there\u2019s this norm because of it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional sport organizations are also adopting and promoting sustainable practices, but collegiate sports are more likely to reach a larger audience due to the number of events offered and the diversity of fans, according to Casper.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many universities compete in more than a dozen sports, from football and basketball to cross country and wrestling.
