The scholarship aims to promote forestry as a career path for students from populations that have been historically underrepresented in the profession.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-related-stories\">\n    <h2 class=\"related-stories__label\">Related<\/h2>\n    <ul class=\"ncst-component__related-stories-container\">\n      \n<li class=\"ncst-component__bold-link-container wp-block-ncst-bold-link\">\n      <a \n      href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/news\/2018\/05\/new-scholarship-provides-opportunity-for-forestry-students\/\"\n      class=\"ncst-component__bold-link text-link\"\n                >\n    <span class=\"text\">Resource Management Service, LLC, (RMS) will fund a new scholarship program for Forest Management majors<\/span><span class=\"arrow-indicator\"><svg class=\"wolficon wolficon-arrow-right-bold\" role=\"img\"  aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<use xlink:href=\"#wolficon-arrow-right-bold\">\n\t\t<\/svg><\/span>\n    <\/a>\n      <\/li>\n  \n\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>In addition to receiving $10,000 a year, Sarah was given the opportunity to do a full-time internship with RMS this summer.<\/span><span> Her internship focuses on controlling the quality of forest management operations, assessing land for timber sales and learning from forestry experts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>One of Sarah&#8217;s primary responsibilities is cruising timber, where she measures a sample plot of land and estimates the amount of standing timber in the forest. Her favorite part of the internship though is <\/span><span>working with loggers to ensure they\u2019re following best management practices, such as not leaving trash or logging debris in ditches or spilling oil on the site. A seemingly simple mistake like accidentally dropping fertilizer into ditches can have grave impacts on water quality and plant diversity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Sarah is on-site from start to finish and by the time trucks are loaded with wood, she has analyzed every aspect of the logging operation, ensuring mills are receiving the best product.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Scholarships are crucial for some students who wouldn\u2019t otherwise get hands-on experience in their chosen field of study. The RMS forestry scholarship, for instance, has allowed Sarah to attend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eforester.org\/\"><span>Society of American Foresters<\/span><\/a><span> <\/span><span>conventions in Oregon and Kentucky, where she networked and created lasting connections with fellow forestry students and professionals. She will also graduate soon with minimal to no debt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"has-green-400-text-color wp-block-ncst-pullquote\">\n  <div class=\"pullquote-container\">\n    <p class=\"pullquote-content\">I\u2019ll be able to fully support myself independently so much sooner than I would be able to with this forestry scholarship.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>As a student in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/fer\/\"><span>Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources<\/span><\/a><span>, Sarah said she\u2019s been surrounded by professional development opportunities that have helped her network and navigate professional work dynamics and expectations. From attending <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cnr.ncsu.edu\/fer\/undergraduate\/internships-and-summer-practicum\/\"><span>Summer Camp<\/span><\/a><span> to conducting undergraduate research, she\u2019s gained the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be a successful forester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Sarah grew up hiking every summer and playing outdoors, so the path to forestry was an easy choice for her to make. Now as a soon-to-be-graduate, she\u2019s debating between pursuing a master&#8217;s degree in forest management or a full-time forestry career.
