Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Recognized as Leader in Outdoor Recreation

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at NC State University is being recognized with the National Recreation Resource Leadership Award from the Society of Outdoor Professionals. Founded in 1947, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management has long been a leader in the outdoor recreation field and will be recognized for its contributions at the National Outdoor Recreation Conference this September.

“The demand for public park access and recreational experiences, along with the desire to play sports, travel and tour the country has never been higher,” said Michael Kanters, Interim Department Head and Professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. “I am extremely proud of how our department is applying the best scientific knowledge to the planning and management of the natural and built environments on which recreation, sport, and tourism depend.”

Undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management receive an enriching learning experience in parks and natural resource recreation, program management, sustainable tourism, sports management and PGA golf management. Each year, faculty compete for and are awarded $1,000,000 to conduct research on health and well-being, human dimensions of built and natural environments, and equitable and sustainable tourism
