Barkalow Distinguished Conservationist Lecture

November 1, 2022 | 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

About This Event

The NC State College of Natural Resources is pleased to announce that the 2022 Frederick and Joan Barkalow Distinguished Conservationist Lecture will be held on Tuesday, November 1 as part of NC State’s Red and White Week. Open to the public, this annual lecture features the work of a conservationist selected by Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology students. The lecture is supported by annual funds and an established endowment by Joanna and Donald Kann in honor of Joanna’s parents.

For the 2022 Barkalow Lecture, Dr. Miyoko Chu will discuss how the fate of birds is entwined with our own — and how technology, citizen science, global communications, and shifts in attitudes and behaviors are changing the speed and scale at which conservation can be achieved to sustain nature and people, in a race against time. As senior director of science communication at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Dr. Chu aims to raise awareness about birds and nature, advance science and protect the natural world. With a love for writing and field biology, she earned a graduate certificate in science communication at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Ph.D. in integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

The College of Natural Resources will livestream the lecture on its YouTube channel. The link to the channel will be provided soon.
