Celebrating Faculty and Staff Achievements 2023–2024

This past academic year was once again packed with impressive work by our faculty and staff at the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Below is a sampling of the achievements of the Center’s faculty fellows, director and associate directors, research associates and scholars, staff and postdoctoral scholars since last July. Congratulations to all for your accomplishments!

Awards and Honors

  • Faculty Fellow Justin Baker received tenure.
  • Faculty Fellow DelWayne Bohnenstiehl received a DELTA Express Grant.
  • Faculty Fellow Ashly Cabas received the Outstanding Global Engagement Award Early Career Faculty from NC State.
  • Associate Director Aaron Hipp won the Center’s Advocate Award.
  • Faculty Fellow Daniela Jones received the Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
  • Postdoctoral scholar Thomas Lake received a NASA-MSU Professional Enhancement Award to attend the IALE-NA conference.
  • Director Ross Meentemeyer received a 2024 Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award from NC State and was inducted into the NC State Research Leadership Academy (RLA).
  • Ph.D. student Caitlin Haedrich and Associate Director Helena Mitasova received a DELTA Exploratory Grant.
  • Associate Director Helena Mitasova and Software Engineers Anna Petrasova, Vaclav Petras, and Corey White were on the team (GeoForAll GRASS GIS Team) that won the Center’s Collaboration & Innovation Award.
  • Associate Director Eric Money was accepted into the 2024 cohort of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science and NSF I-GUIDE Community Champions. He also received a DELTA Express Grant.
  • Faculty Fellow Dan Obenour won the Center’s Gladys West Award.
  • Research Associate Bill Slocumb won the Center’s Creativity in Teaching Award.
  • Associate Teaching Professor Stacy Supak received a DELTA Express Grant.
  • Faculty Fellow Mirela Tulbure was promoted to professor.
  • Faculty Fellow Karl Wegmann won the Center’s Beacon Award.

  • In October 2023, Ph.D. student Rebecca Composto and Associate Director Eric Money taught two GIS lessons at Lakewood Montessori Middle School in Durham, NC.
  • Research by postdoctoral scholar Scott Ogletree and Associate Director Aaron Hipp was covered by Phys.org, News Medical, ScienceDaily, Interesting Engineering, Tech Times, EcoWatch, the World Economic Forum, The Washington Post, ASBMB Today (The Member Magazine of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), STAT News, Science Alert, The Weather Network, and The Healthy (A Reader’s Digest brand).
  • Associate Director Eric Money and the MGIST program were featured in a story in the online and print editions of Esri’s ArcUser magazine.
