Meet Our Fall 2021 Incoming Students
This fall, a new cohort of undergraduate students will join the NC State College of Natural Resources. They come from different backgrounds, will be working toward a variety of degrees, and are brought together by their “Think and Do” attitudes.
We recently spoke with eight incoming students to learn more about their journeys and why they joined the College of Natural Resources. Check out their stories below and discover how they are pursuing their passions as the newest members of the Wolfpack.
Cate Harris
Major: Sustainable Materials and Technology
Hometown: Burlington, North Carolina
- Cate is passionate about sustainability and hopes to “help make sustainability more mainstream.”
- During high school, she played volleyball and was involved in many volunteer-based clubs. As president of the Kids Helping Wish Kids club, she helped plan annual fundraisers for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
- Cate also loves to bake.
Ahobil Thuppal
Major: Environmental Sciences
Hometown: Mooresville, North Carolina
- Ahobil chose the environmental sciences program for its flexibility, which allows students to follow a variety of career paths.
- During high school, he was a member of the Mooresville Robotics Team and a hurdler on his school’s track team.
- Ahobil also plays three instruments and sings classical Indian music.
Claudia Farnell
Major: Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology
Hometown: Denver, Colorado
- Claudia chose NC State for the beautiful campus, friendly atmosphere and the internships and opportunities in the Raleigh area. “As soon as I stepped on campus, I knew I belonged at NC State,” she said.
- Claudia ran cross country during high school and enjoys wildlife photography.
- Her favorite quote is: “The greatest danger to our future is apathy.” – Jane Goodall.
Quoneise Matthews
Majors: Paper Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering
Hometown: Summerville, South Carolina
- Quoneise chose NC State for its community and her passion for paper materials and making a difference.
- She is excited to join clubs and organizations on campus.
- During high school, Quoneise participated in theater, multiple clubs, and activities at her local church.
Steven Castello
Major: Sport Management
Hometown: Duxbury, Massachusetts
- Steven plays soccer and golf and was team captain of his high school soccer team.
- He’s excited to live in Raleigh, meet new people and support NC State’s sports teams.
- Steven’s favorite quote is: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” – Pelé
Jennifer Giordano
Major: Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management
Hometown: Waxhaw, North Carolina
- Jennifer chose NC State for its supportive community and positive atmosphere.
- During high school, she participated in the Improve Care Now International Network, Patient Advisory Council, National Honors Society and yearbook committee. She also volunteered at multiple pride parades.
- Jennifer is most excited to work with her love for the environment and embark on a path to a career in sustainability.
Austin Brown
Majors: Paper Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering
Hometown: Kings Mountain, North Carolina
- Austin grew up on a farm and has always wanted to attend NC State.
- During high school, he volunteered in his community and participated in chorus and track and field.
- Austin is interested in learning about “renewable resources and processes that will produce more efficient, productive and safer farms.”
Chris Lavoie
Majors: Sport Management and Professional Golf Management
Hometown: Upton, Massachusetts
- During high school, Chris worked at a local golf course and played varsity golf.
- He’s excited to “get involved on campus, meet new people and enjoy the weather.”
- Chris’ favorite quote is: “If you don’t believe in yourself, who is going to believe in you?” – Tom Brady
