Each year, Paper Science and Engineering joins in on the College of Engineering summer camps for aspiring engineers. While we sit in the College of Natural Resources, we are jointly administered by the College of Engineering and benefit greatly from the added programs they host. Camp week was June 15-20, 2025 and each day held new, exciting lectures and labs taught PSE faculty directly. The students worked to understand paper properties, sustainability, recycling, biofuel sources and polymer properties in the paper industry. While they studied hard, the labs were designed to be entertaining and enlightening, ensuring students had a good time while learning.

Students also took a field trip to Centennial Campus to get a broader view of NC State’s engineering offerings and toured the Wellness and Recreation Center inspiring many students to be determined to attend once they graduate high school! Their trip ended back at Biltmore Hall to enjoy some Howling Cow ice cream before going back to the lab.

On their final morning with PSE, campers worked in their groups to present on a theme from one lab. Parents, faculty and staff joined to watch the budding paper engineers explain, in detail, their laboratory findings and conclusions. Upon leaving after a full week of camp, PSE staff, student counselors and faculty had a lot of questions from the parents and a lot of interest from the students in applying to the before unknown to them program. A huge success for all involved!
