Anna Petrasova Awarded Travel Grant to Present at International Conference
At the end of October, center Ph.D. student Anna Petrasova will head to the 24th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographical Information Systems in San Francisco, CA, recipient of a $1,000 travel grant. The award covers Anna’s registration, travel, and accommodations, and in return, she will co-present at a special demo session, highlighting the latest technologies she and her colleagues have been developing in the center’s Geovisualization Lab.
The team’s demo paper, Immersive Tangible Geospatial Modeling, will showcase an innovative blending of virtual reality and Tangible Landscape, the collaborative modeling environment developed at the center that pairs an interactive interface driven by touch with open-source GIS software.
The presenting team includes Payam Tabrizian, Anna, Brendan Harmon, Vaclav Petras, Helena Mitasova and Ross Meetenmeyer –– all active members of the NCSU GeoForAll Lab at the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Anna and Vaclav are also members of the GRASS GIS project steering committee.
Their presentation will combine bird’s-eye and first-person views of virtual terrain, using Oculus headsets to provide an immersive experience of landscapes easily altered and updated in real-time through Tangible Landscape. The team posted a preview of this interaction on their YouTube channel earlier this year.
