Special Geospatial Forum to Explore Social Justice and Sustainability
On October 3, 2019, North Carolina State University will host renowned critical urban planning and environmental social science scholar and author Julian Agyeman to present his work at the intersection of social justice and sustainability, followed by a panel discussion, Q&A session and book signing.
The event –– “Just Sustainabilities and the Future of North Carolina: How Does Who Can Belong Determine What the State Can Become?” –– will take place in room 4106 of James B. Hunt Jr. Library on NC State’s Centennial Campus. Agyeman’s presentation is entitled “Just Sustainabilities in Policy, Planning and Practice” and will begin at 3:30 pm.
Agyeman is a professor of urban and environmental policy and planning at Tufts University. He is the originator of the increasingly influential concept of “just sustainabilities,” conceptualized as the full integration of social justice and sustainability, and which he defines as “the need to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems.” In his talk, Agyeman will discuss the concept of just sustainabilities and provide practical examples from his recent research into urban planning and design, food justice, and planning for intercultural cities.
A chain reaction panel discussion will follow the presentation, exploring, among other topics, the opportunities for (and limitations of) geospatial sciences to advance social justice and sustainability, and the potential for geospatial sciences to help resolve tensions between social justice and sustainability. The panelists include:
Dara Bloom –– Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, NC State
Louie Rivers –– Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, College of Natural Resources, NC State
Eleni Bardaka –– Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering, NC State
The Oct. 3 event is a special extension of the Center for Geospatial Analytics’ Geospatial Forum series and is co-sponsored by the Center for Geospatial Analytics; Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management; Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences; and the College of Natural Resources.
The event hosts are Bethany Cutts, a faculty fellow at the Center for Geospatial Analytics and associate professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and Byron Ifediora, Geospatial Analytics doctoral student and one of Cutts’ graduate student advisees.
