Description

The Associate Director (AD) will focus primarily on the environment and climate change policy and education throughout Wake County and the Triangle at-large. The AD will attend meetings on municipalities climate goals, green schools, green building, stormwater, and water quality as well as parallel issues. AD will work with the Executive Director, and other members of the WakeUP staff, to build programming around land use and climate/environmental factors. In this role, the AD will bring awareness of policy and practices that will help us fight climate change and be a model for the rest of North Carolina.


The position will work with and ensure collaboration between partnering agencies, meeting the needs and expectations of stakeholders, and the overall community.


This position will start and remain largely remote. But will often be required to attend community meetings, events, and facilities. Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature.


Candidates should expect a moderate number of nights and weekend events and meetings.


Candidates must have a valid driver’s license, their own vehicle or one which they have free access to, a cell phone, and a laptop or tablet. WakeUP reimburses documented expenses but is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) organization.

Responsibilities
Meet with and participate in meetings with partners on climate and environmental issues.
Put together events with key speakers with the objective of building awareness.
Coordinate with local municipality staff and grassroots community leaders.
Develop policy frameworks for WakeUP to advocate to elected officials.
Write blogs and white papers that can be used in arguments for policy and education.
Maintains effective working relationships with volunteers, staff persons at WakeUP and other local partner organizations.
Draft social media language to promote events and issues.
Works with WakeUP and community stakeholder staff to identify needs and strategy.
Meets with stakeholders to understand scope, key messages, and design needs.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college, with a major in environmental science, natural sciences, political science, or planning.
3 years’ experience in environmental sciences, water quality, planning/permitting, or grassroots environmental organizing. Or an equal combination of experience and education.
Intermediate or better understanding of water quality, climate change, and environmental impacts of land use.
Proven comfortability with collaborating with grassroots organizations, community members, government agencies.
Basic event planning and public speaking.
Experience with social media platforms, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
Develop program objectives and work independently on several program objectives at once.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office packages
Strong writing and copyediting skills
High level of initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments efficiently.
Highly organized and detail-oriented, ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines and work independently and as part of a team.
