The Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic team to study the impacts of prescribed burning on water quality and quantity. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research in the interface of Wildland Fire and Watershed Science, with a focus on understanding the interactions between fire dynamics, hydrological processes, and ecosystem responses. Compensation will start at $61,800 with benefits. The current funding lasts for 3 years with a built in 3% raise each year. The project began 16 years ago with the creation of a paired watershed in the Piedmont of North Carolina.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage and conduct research on topics related to wildland fire behavior, fire ecology, and hydrological impacts of fire.
Implement field experiments using fire science, data analysis, and modeling studies.
Train summer students and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including ecologists, hydrologists, climate scientists, fire scientists, and land managers.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
Contribute to the preparation of research proposals and progress reports.
Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Hydrology, Forestry, Ecology, or Fire Science.
Demonstrated expertise in wildland fire science, hydrology, or a closely related area.
Strong analytical skills and experience with statistical or computational modeling tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with field measurement of fuels, fire intensity, GIS or experience with field measurements in watershed hydrology.
A track record of publications in high-impact journals.
Familiarity with grant writing and project management.
Ability to obtain a North Carolina Drivers License
Experience with fire, including NWCG courses: IC-100, S-130, S-190, L-180
