The Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time appointment at the Assistant Professor rank in quantitative human geography with expertise in GIS and/or spatial analysis, and a research focus in one or more of the following areas: urban economic geography, urban structure and change, regional development, population dynamics, or a similar area of study. The position will be based in the College of Science with an expected start date of July 1, 2020.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the Department’s proposed undergraduate specialization in Urban Systems and Planning and additional courses in the candidate’s field of expertise. Successful candidates will be expected to build and maintain a strong, externally funded research agenda and maintain a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students. The candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of the curriculum (lower and upper division undergraduate, MS/PhD). We encourage applications from those whose teaching and scholarship advances an understanding of cultural and individual diversity in society (e.g., diversity related to age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion or culture). The normal teaching load is three courses per year.
Required Qualifications
* Ph.D. in Geography or a related field in hand by August 1, 2020
* A developing or established research agenda in urban geography addressed through application of GIS and/or spatial analysis
* A record of, or potential for, publishing in top-tier journals in relevant fields
* Ability to teach upper-division and lower-division undergraduate courses and graduate-level courses in GIS and/or spatial analysis, and in the candidate’s area of expertise
* Demonstrated excellence, or clear evidence of potential for excellence, in teaching
* Demonstrable commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
Preferred Qualifications
* Evidence of, or potential for, strong external grant activity
* Ability to teach courses in urban geography, economic geography or urban/regional planning
* Area of specialization that emphasizes studies in the urban environment
* Ability to collaborate with Department faculty and complement its existing strengths
