Description

We are seeking one technician to collect data on Northern Bobwhite coveys across several states in the southeast. This position requires travel throughout the sampling time frame. Data collection will occur in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to gain experience working with state and national NRCS offices, the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative, and the Farm Service Agency. Successful applicants may also assist with data management and manipulation. Individuals will have the opportunity to learn about designing large-scale wildlife research studies and private land conservation programs in the US.  


Primary duties: 
1.    Performing covey call surveys
2.    Operating Song Meters
3.    Communicating with landowners, agency staff, and university staff


Willingness to travel extensively is required. Must be willing to perform field work in remote locations at early hours. Experience with point counts, bobwhite covey calls, or other forms of distance sampling is a plus. Must show attention to detail and strong organizational skills.


Physical Demand:
Driving long distances, early morning field work, carrying up to 20 lbs of field equipment.


Breakdown of Responsibilities (in percent of time):
100% field work and travel


Pay: $10.25/hr (40 hrs/week)

Education and Experience:
Some classes in Ecology, Biology, Wildlife, or similar field.


Preferred Qualifications:
1.     A strong interest in game bird management and ecology, wildlife, or related field
2.     Experience with field work is preferred
3.     Comfort with navigating off-road locations, especially in darkness or low light. 
4.     Experience with point counts, covey calls, or distance sampling is a plus.
5.     Ability to communicate and interact with a diverse group of people (e.g., landowners, agency personnel) 
6.     A positive attitude and a good work ethic
7.     Organization skills, attention to detail
8.     A valid driver’s license and a good driving record
9.     Experience with ArcGIS is a plus.
