The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response division of the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs.  The NC Forest Service (NCFS) provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.  
 
The Markets and Utilization Forester serves as the agency subject matter specialist on forest product markets and the utilization of forest products throughout the state.  Maintains a database of timber buyers, primary, and secondary wood-using industries.  Conducts annual surveys of primary forest products mills to determine the amount and source of roundwood receipts, timber product drain by county and byproduct utilization in partnership with the US Forest Service Timber Product Output program.  Interfaces with the NC Department of Revenue to account for operations subject to the Primary Forest Product Assessment Act.  Maintains strong relationships with the state’s forest products industry, promotes diverse markets for forest products, and communicates on the extent, economic contributions, utilization, and production of forest resources in NC.  Provides leadership, training and technical assistance in forest products utilization and marketing to NCFS personnel, landowners, businesses operating in the forest sector supply chain, and stakeholders statewide.  Supports and promotes forest-based economic development efforts for traditional and emerging markets, especially efforts promoting markets for underutilized forest resources.  Develops expertise in understanding NC’s regionally diverse timber markets and transfers this knowledge to inform forest management options and decisions. Develops subject matter education and outreach materials.  Frequently collaborates with in-state partners and stakeholders as well as state forestry counterparts throughout the southern region.  Serves on committees and work groups as assigned.  May pursue and administer external grant funding for strategic projects supporting the program area and agency initiatives.  Provide support for all-risk incident/emergency response.    
Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri.  Periodic statewide travel is required.  Out-of-state travel is occasionally required.  Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.  NCFS is an Emergency Response Division. Work schedules may require extended hours and/or possible emergency call-back.
 
Duty Station will be discussed in the interview and will either be at the NCFS headquarters in Wake County (512 N Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27604) or at Griffiths Forestry Center in Johnston County (2411 Old US Highway 70 West, Clayton, NC  27520). 

Must obtain a valid NC Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.

Bachelor s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and three years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and three years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
