Description

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track position Assistant Professor in Silviculture. The appointment is 45% research, 45% teaching and 10% service.


The sucessful candidate must have a strong background in forest management with an emphasis on ecological silviculture and/or forest restoration.


Teaching and Mentoring Responsibilities:
The candidate will teach courses in the forest management and natural resources curricula. Possible courses include an undergraduate ecological silviculture course, co-teach the senior forest management capstone course, or a graduate course in the area of the candidate’s area of research on an as need basis (e.g. alternate years). The candidate will be responsible for advising and mentoring forest management and natural resource undergraduate and graduate students.


Research Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized, externally-funded research program in ecological forest management. Possible areas of focus include forest ecosystem restoration, adaptive management of forest ecosystems to promote forest health and other ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity, wildlife management, water storage and flood control prevention. The candidate is strongly encouraged to collaborate with other faculty in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, and other scientists at North Carolina State University, southeastern US, and the world.


Service Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to serve on academic committees (e.g. departmental, college, and university), supervise forestry undergraduate club(s), and participate in professional society activities

Other Work/Responsibilities
 
Minimum Education/Experience
A Ph.D. in silviculture or forest management and at least two years post-doctoral experience or strong evidence of potential excellence.
Departmental Required Skills
A proven track record of high-impact publications,
Demonstrated experience or potential attract extramural funding,
Demonstrated experience and desire to interact with undergraduates students,
Excellent problem-solving and oral and written communication skills
Desire to collaborate in teaching, research, and service missions of NC State.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience with mixed species stands, natural hardwood forests, or sensitive/threatened forest ecosystems such as bottomland hardwoods or longleaf pine is highly desirable.


Earned at least one degree from a SAF-accredited forestry program.
