Ryan Byrd ’27 Reflects on Engineering Journey, Career Goals

Ryan poses on hill

As he advances through his third year at NC State, Ryan Byrd has already built a notable record of academic achievement, industry experience and service.

Byrd, who is dual majoring in paper science and engineering and chemical engineering, is a recipient of the Asea Brown Boveri Inc. and Hercules Employees scholarships.

This year, Byrd worked as a chemical engineering intern at International Paper in Georgetown, South Carolina, building on a prior internship with Marcal Paper in Cordova, North Carolina.

Beyond his academic and professional activities, Byrd hosts the Byrd and Bear 5K trail race annually. The event has raised more than $50,000 for the Autism Society of North Carolina.

We recently spoke with Byrd about his journey at NC State, his experiences in internships and campus life, and the passions and goals that drive him inside and outside the classroom. Check out the Q&A below to learn more.

Why did you choose to study paper science and engineering?

Ryan Byrd: I chose engineering as my career path because I enjoyed solving problems and creating things. I had done robotics and was a camp counselor for an engineering camp in high school. I also attended the engineering camp at NC State that furthered my interest in engineering. The reason I chose paper science and engineering specifically is the focus on sustainability and the more focused class size.

What is your favorite memory or class from your time at NC State?

Byrd: My favorite memory at NC State is attending the TAPPI-PIMA Student Summit. I liked being able to learn from all different kinds of workers and experts in the field. I feel like it was beneficial for my growth as an engineer and also gave me time to spend with colleagues and friends.

What are your career goals?

Byrd: My current career goal is to become a process engineer. I am also interested in exploring opportunities with engineering consulting firms or chemical suppliers, though my primary focus is on improving chemical processes.

How has the College of Natural Resources prepared you for your future?

Byrd: The College of Natural Resources has prepared me by providing scholarship opportunities, supporting my professional development and offering resources for academic and mental health needs. I have benefited from the college’s tutoring and counseling programs and believe these resources can significantly support students on their path to graduation.

What advice would you give to students entering your major?

Byrd: The advice I would give to someone pursuing my major is to take the time to truly learn and fully understand the material being taught. It is also important to persevere through challenges, as college can be difficult at times. Seeking support from university resources or external sources can be essential if anything threatens your progress.

Tell us about something you are passionate about outside of your academic studies.

Byrd: Outside of school, I am passionate about running, which I enjoy so much that I started my own 5K. I find it to be a relaxing way to exercise and explore my surroundings. I also have an interest in running shoes and enjoy keeping up with the latest technologies in the field.
