In honor of Women’s History Month, we recently spoke with female faculty and staff about their experiences in the field of higher education and their contributions to the College of Natural Resources. Check out their stories below.

Forest Manager Elizabeth Snider

Elizabeth Snider is the forest manager at NC State’s College of Natural Resources. She is a 2005 Master of Forestry alumna who returned in 2014 as a silviculturist before being promoted to forest manager in 2016. In her current position, Snider oversees a wide variety of forest management activities, including an ongoing effort to plant one of North Carolina’s most endangered tree species at the Carl Alwin Schenck Memorial Forest.

Charlynne Smith is the Recreation Resources Service director for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management. After earning her master’s degree, Smith joined the NC State College of Natural Resources as a research associate with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management and the Center for Geospatial Analytics. In her current role, Smith directs a team of four regional consultants, who, alongside her, deliver technical assistance, applied research and continuing education related to park and leisure services for North Carolina.

Forestry Professor Mary Watzin

Mary Watzin is a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at the NC State College of Natural Resources. She holds a bachelor’s degree in marine sciences from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. in marine sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Watzin’s research specialties include aquatic ecology and watershed management, and she has a wide-ranging program of research focused on understanding how human activities influence ecosystem health and how adaptive management can be used to improve environmental outcomes.

Pulp and Paper Advisory Board Leaders Cindy Hendren and Jennifer Piercy

Cindy Hendren is the board’s first female president and works full-time as mill manager for International Paper’s mill in Henderson, Kentucky. Jennifer Piercy is the first female to simultaneously hold roles as the board’s executive director and director of undergraduate recruiting for the Paper Science and Engineering program at the NC State College of Natural Resources. Both help to coordinate fundraising, program engagement and industry relations.
