The Right Environment
With a student body of just over 1,700, our college is one of the smallest at NC State, home to a close-knit community and students who get the attention they deserve β including personalized advising and instruction. At the same time, our students benefit from all the resources and support of NC State, the largest university in North Carolina.
Our college also offers the best of both worlds in terms of location: Weβre based in Raleigh β the stateβs capital and one of Americaβs most-awarded cities β but enjoy easy access to exceptional outdoor learning labs, including Schenck Forest just 10 minutes from our door and Hill Forest only 45 minutes away.
Whether you want to study the native animals of Namibia or the forests of Sweden, our college will give you the opportunity to study the environment, diverse societies and engineering of sustainable resources around the world. And youβll do it all at a university consistently ranked as one of the nationβs best values in education.
Admissions Toolkit
Meet soon-to-be #NCStateCNR alumnus Jacob Schoen. π
Jacob is graduating this fall with his bachelorβs degree in paper science and engineering (PSE). After graduation, he will be joining Sonoco Packaging`s Emerging Leader program in January in Hartsville, South Carolina.
For the past four years, Jacob has been a member of TAPPI and has attended multiple TAPPI student summits. During his time in the college, he has had several internships working as a process engineer on paper machines with International Paper and Sonoco Packaging.
βThe College of Natural Resources has given me great opportunities to learn both in and out of the class. Having the opportunity for a large number of internships as soon as freshman year has been the best aspect of being in the PSE and CNR community.
The labs that the PSE major provides are excellent hands-on experience that directly relates to skills needed in the paper-making industry. Getting the chance to make paper on the Wolfpack Baby paper machine has to be one of my favorite memories from these last four years.β

Meet soon-to-be #NCStateCNR alumnus Kai Hale. π
Kai is graduating this fall with his bachelorβs degree in sport management. After graduation, he will serve as the head junior varsity baseball coach at Jordan High School in Durham, NC. There, he plans to become a certified teacher and gym coach.
Currently, Kai is entering his fourth year coaching with the Riptide Travel Baseball Academy. During his time in the college, he has been the recipient of the Wayne Williamson and Bette Rose Scholarship in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management and the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Memorial Scholarship Fund.
βI was presented with the opportunity to transfer schools and pursue a different college experience that I thought I had longed for. While I didnβt end up moving schools, Iβve now realized that while I may not be in the top one percent of Wolfpack fans today, attending NC State was not only the right college to attend but the only college for me.
Had I chosen to go to a different school, I wouldnβt have been able to meet the people I call friends now. The opportunities I capitalized on with my new job and the NC State internship program, which has now ultimately led me to what I would call my dream job post-graduation, wouldnβt have been an option if I had moved schools. Looking back on these past few years, I am beyond grateful for the blessings that were presented right in front of me.β β@Kash_233

Our own Katherine Griffey β26 recently asked students: What is one piece of advice they have for staying motivated during finals?
Check out what they had to say. π
Meet soon-to-be #NCStateCNR alumna Charm Wheaton. π
Charm is graduating this fall with her master`s degree in environmental assessment. After graduation, she plans to transition into a full-time role in environmental consulting.
During her time at NC State, she was involved with the NC State Coastal Community Resilience Immersive Training Program, which is an internship hosted by NC Stateβs Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative. Charm is also a member of the Xi Sigma Pi Honor Society.
"No matter the path, we all learned that caring for natural resources means caring for people, too. We studied how environmental policies shape lives, how communities depend on access to clean air and water, and how sustainability is about both ecological and social well-being. Our work is not just about managing land or resources; it is about creating a future where both people and the planet can thrive.
As we prepare for what comes next, I hope we carry with us the lessons this college has taught us: to stay curious, compassionate, and collaborative. The challenges ahead are complex, but so are the skills and perspectives weβve gained."

Recently, we spoke to a few of our students and asked them to describe #NCStateCNR in just seven words. Check out what they had to say.

We enjoyed seeing the adorable therapy dogs during a recent @ncstateferlb event and sipping on delicious hot cocoa and apple cider at the annual Biltmore tree trimming.
Our own Dr. Sunkyu Park recently received the 2025 Andrew Chase Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. π
This prestigious award recognizes Dr. Parkβs contributions to the field of forest biomaterials and his leadership in advancing research and education in his field. He has been working to turn waste from the pulp and paper industry into the biofuel of the future.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Dr. Park!

Recently, several students, including our own Ellie Boitnott, shared their research and creativity in a unique way at D.H. Hill Jr. Library. π¨ π¬
At the annual Sidewalk Symposium, undergraduate students shared their research through sidewalk chalk drawings and informal presentations. During the symposium, Boitnott, a senior majoring in environmental sciences, presented her research on climate change and mental health.
βThis kind of builds off of research I did last semester for a senior capstone course. It was all about social media eco-anxiety β anxiety caused by climate-related social media, and how it affects our mental health. And so this was more just general mental health and climate change.β
