Research

Our interdisciplinary research yields practical, sustainable solutions to the scientific, economic and societal challenges of a dynamic natural world.

Real Solutions for Natural Resource Challenges

At the College of Natural Resources, we know that no one innovates alone. That’s why we conduct our future-focused research alongside the people who confront natural resource challenges every day: nonprofit organizations, government agencies, industry leaders and other community partners.

Our approach produces solutions that meaningfully improve the way humans use and renew nature in the ways we work, play and grow. Our college is a leading recipient of federal forestry research funds and a hub of interdisciplinary innovation. Meanwhile, our extension programs in forestry, wood products and tourism bridge the gap between science and action.

As climate change, land-use shifts and competition for scarce resources rapidly transform the planet, our work has never been more relevant or more vital.

Beyond the Lab

Our researchers have an unparalleled opportunity to study natural resource challenges where they occur. Our more than 93,000 acres of research forests and natural laboratories immerse scholars in woodlands, waterways and recreational spaces to discover new ways to reduce forest fires, mitigate floods, develop sustainable biomaterials and make parks more accessible.

Our campus in Raleigh equips researchers with cutting-edge technologies and connects them with a cross-disciplinary network of peers who enrich and elevate their ideas.

In the News

Our faculty share their knowledge and insights about the latest environmental issues with media outlets all around the world.
