Hugh McLean Selected as 2019 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient
Hugh McLean, Vice President of Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs in Wake County, has been selected as the 2019 PRTM Outstanding Alumni Award recipient.
Each year the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management selects an alumnus from one of their programs that represents the department in an outstanding manner. Hugh McLean was selected for his exemplary leadership and career-long dedication to children and youth through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County. The award was presented to Hugh during the PRTM Alumni & Friends Spring Celebration on Thursday, April 11 at Pullen Park.
Hugh is a 1986 Graduate of NC State University with a BS in Recreation Resources Administration. In September 1986, he joined the Boys Club of Wake County as the first Program Director of the newly formed Boys Club of Wake Forest. In 1990, he integrated girls into the program to form the Boys and Girls Club of Wake Forest. In the time Hugh has been with the Boys and Girls Club he has increased active club membership in the Wake Forest/Northern Wake County community from 100 children and teens to over 1,000. Hugh has designed and opened three full service Boys and Girls Clubs throughout Wake County with the mission of serving more children and teens with greater impact especially for those young people that need it the most.
As Vice President of Operations for the Wake County Clubs, Hugh manages an annual operating budget of $3.7 million dollars for 7 full service Boys and Girls Clubs, 5 federally funded feeding programs at local Clubs and is responsible for club services to over 5,000 children and teens. In addition, he hires, trains and supervises 31 full-time club professionals.
Hugh’s wife Kim, of 32 years is also an NC State Graduate with a BS in Recreation Resources Administration and holds a MS in Special Education. They have two children, Chase, who works for the Maryland/DC Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and Morgan, who is a Special Education Teacher in Guilford County. In December 2017, they welcomed their first grandchild, Olivia.
