Summer School 2021: Sport & Film
Summer classes give you an extra chance to complete courses and stay on track or get ahead in your degree program. For those wishing to graduate early, summer courses let you cross off required classes so you can take others during the fall and spring. You can shave a semester or two off of your college career.
NC State’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management is offering several courses this summer including PRT 491 with Associate Professor Kyle Bunds.
PRT 491 Sport & Film – Summer Session II (June 28-August 3, 2021)
Students will use film and media studies and sport sociology to critically engage and interpret a series of popular sport-related films. The class will work together using research and popular press articles to critique contemporary films while analyzing their role in perpetuating or challenging dominant ideology. See Sport & Film Course Syllabus.
Featured films to review and critically evaluate include A League of Our Own, The Hurricane and Million Dollar Baby. By the end the session, students will be able to write and think critically about the role that sport-based films in particular play in promoting and challenging dominant formations of nationalism, gender, race, social class, and activism in Western society.
