Summer School 2021: PRTM Courses to Consider
For those wishing to graduate early, summer courses let you cross off required classes so you can take others during the fall and spring. You can shave a semester or two off of your college career. It’s not to late, although you may have to pay a late enrollment fee, to register for the second session of summer school, i.e. registration and tuition for Summer Session II is due June 1st.
NC State’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management is offering several courses during second summer session including:
PRT 491 Sport & Film | Summer Session II (June 28-August 3, 2021)
Students will use film and media studies and sport sociology to critically engage and interpret a series of popular sport-related films. The class will work together using research and popular press articles to critique contemporary films while analyzing their role in perpetuating or challenging dominant ideology. See Sport & Film Course Syllabus. Featured films to review and critically evaluate include A League of Our Own, The Hurricane and Million Dollar Baby. By the end the session, students will be able to write and think critically about the role that sport-based films in particular play in promoting and challenging dominant formations of nationalism, gender, race, social class, and activism in Western society. PRT 277-601 – Psychological and Cultural Dimensions of Sport | Summer Session II (June 28- July 30, 2021)
Are you interested in sport and society? This course examines topics including youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional sport, racial and gender disparities and sport for development. Together, we will examine sport as a social institution and its impact on American society. Teacher: Associate Professor, Kimberly Bush.
PRT 200 – Health, Wellness and the Pursuit of Happiness | Summer Session Five Week Session (June 28- July 30, 2021)
Despite having one of the highest standards of living in the world, a growing number of Americans are unhappy. The global pandemic of 2020 gave most of us a pause in which to reflect on our personal priorities as well as the realities surrounding racial and ethnic discrimination in our country. Course modules focus on activities that have been proven to increase happiness along with strategies to build healthy habits. Modules include: Why Leisure?, Happiness, Managing Stress, Social Connections, Personal Finance and Happiness and more. You can learn about Dr. Kanters and this inspiring course in this video.
