FER Departmental Awards
At the final Departmental Grad Seminar on Thursday 18 April 2024, the FER Graduate Committee announced this year’s winners of the departmental graduate awards. The Graduate Committee evaluated 27 applications total and ranked them using quantitative criteria for each award. And this year’s winners are:
*Summerville Award for research on “minor” tree species of NC, comes with a $1,000 cash award to one MS/MR and one PhD student. Winners: Margaux Whitley (MS), Jonathan Kressuk (PhD)
*Namkoong Award to promote scholarship and ethics in forestry and conservation, comes with a $3,600 cash award to one MS/MR/PhD student. Winner: Lauren Pharr (PhD)
*FERFFEGE Award to recognize scholarship and service in graduate education, comes with a $1,000 cash award to one MS/MR and one PhD student. Winners: Hanne Parks (MR), Hannah Desrochers (PhD)
*Fred and Rita Cubbage Leadership Award to reward leadership and service within the department and local community, comes with a $500 cash award to one MS/MR and one PhD student. Winners: Casey Wofford (MS), Courtney Deviney (PhD)
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who submitted applications for this year’s awards! Although we can only offer these awards to a small subset of people, we want to thank all of our graduate students for the great work they do that makes our programs a success and the world a better place.
