Summary
Together with teams comprised of community partners, students, and myriad interdisciplinary collaborators, Bethany Cutts uses an environmental justice framework to guide scientific inquiry. Research, teaching and engagement aims to identify, center and amplify human-nature relationships commonly overlooked or underestimated by narratives of resilience and sustainability in the US that implicitly or explicitly privilege and reinforce white supremacy and norms of cultural domination. Geospatial approaches to data, analytics and visualization play an important role in efforts to represent and communicate the material legacies of discriminatory policies as well as to identify opportunities to change policy, programming and practice.
The Race and Place seminar series is intended to highlight research that contextualizes race by speaking to environmental justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the geographical and geospatial sciences.
