Hear From the Class of 2027: What We Love About PSE

by: Noah Crowder ’27, dual degree candidate, business minor

Recently, I reached out to some of my PSE classmates to learn more about their favorite parts of the paper science and engineering program. Hear what they had to say!

I’d say my favorite part of the program is how well the labs and coursework align with what we see in industry. That real-world connection, combined with the incredible internship opportunities, has given me so much valuable experience. On top of that, the friendships I’ve made here have been truly special and have made the journey even better.

My favorite part of paper science is how connected everything we learn is to the actual industry. I noticed it a lot during my summer internship, so many of the tests and problem solving skills I’d practiced in class showed up in real situations. I also like how the program pushes us to get hands-on experience early on, which makes what we’re learning feel more meaningful. A lot of other majors don’t get that same level of direct application, and I think that’s what makes paper science really stand out.

I have never taken a set of courses that translate so directly to what I see out in the field. Most chemical engineering classes tend to be more conceptual, but every paper science course I’ve taken has been incredibly applicable. It’s unbelievable how cool it is to learn something in class one week and then recognize it on the machine or in an industrial setting the next. That connection between classroom learning and real-world application has made my experience in the program both unique and rewarding.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience in paper science engineering has been the exceptional sense of community. The professors and fellow students cultivate an incredibly welcoming environment, fostering a strong support system where collaboration and mutual success are highly valued. This atmosphere goes beyond mere academics; it is a place where genuine connections are forged. The faculty’s dedication to student achievement is evident in their willingness to provide guidance, mentorship, and personalized attention, ensuring every student has the resources needed to thrive. Likewise, the camaraderie among the student body is unparalleled, creating a network of support that has been instrumental in my academic and personal growth. I have not only gained a deeper understanding of the field but have also had the privilege of meeting some of my best friends and future colleagues in this program. This unique combination of professional excellence and personal connection makes paper science and engineering a truly special community to be a part of.

My favorite part of paper science is the incredible community I’ve found here. I’ve made some of my closest friends through this program, and I’m truly grateful for that. No matter the situation, everyone celebrates each other’s successes and is always ready to lend a hand.
